How are Vapor Tech coatings different from other coatings? Vapor Tech coatings provide a finish that atomically bonds to substrates, becoming a non-removable extension of the object coated. The hardness of the coating provides protection against corrosion, scratching and wear not found in other coatings. The ability to apply a virtually dimensionless coating makes it possible to introduce Vapor Tech coatings to objects already in manufacture without retooling. The patented low temperature process makes Vapor Tech coatings especially suitable for putting a metallic finish on plastic parts. How does your process work? Our PVD process utilizes a high current, low voltage electric arc to evaporate any electrically conductive material. The deposition process is operated in a highly controlled vacuum environment to deposit very adherent and dense thin coatings. Our unique capability enables our customers to coat traditional metal substrates as well as heat sensitive substrates such as plastics and zinc. We are the inventor, developer, and owner of this technology and we have numerous patents on both the hardware and the application. Isn’t this harmful to the environment? Vapor Tech’s Performance Coatings and Coating Processes are environmentally safe and dry processes. The process presents no hazard to equipment operator or technicians, and do not damage the environment. The processes are compatible with almost any operating environment, from factory floor to clean room. What types of materials can you deposit? We can deposit almost any metallic source material but the most commonly used are Titanium, Zirconium, Chromium, Stellite, Copper, Aluminum, Nickel, Silver, Titanium- Aluminum and Titanium-Zirconium. Specialty source materials can be ordered to meet your specific requirements. What is the thickness of your coating? Vapor Tech coatings are virtually dimensionless. They can be as thin as 50 nanometers (5x10-8 meters). This is about 1/500th the thickness of the human hair. The coating can be controlled to as thick as 50 microns (5X10-5 meters). This is about twice the thickness of a human hair. Will the Vapor Tech process change the texture of my part in the coating process? Super-thin coatings from Vapor Tech processes will not change the surface texture of your part. If the part has a BRUSHED surface, it will remain BRUSHED post-PVD. How do I get started and then transition to internal production? If your current requirements do not initially justify a coating system purchase, you may wish to use the Vapor Tech Coating Services Operation installed at our 60,000 sq. ft. Coating Services facility in Colorado. Machines in this facility are usually dedicated to large volume Contract Coating Services. This unique arrangement enables manufactures to quickly introduce new products to market. As demand grows to a point that a system purchase is economically justified, Vapor Tech can build a machine and transfer the proven production process to your facility. What is the capacity of your chambers? Our coating systems are designed for high volume operations with maximum throughput and the lowest possible piece price. Capacity, in specific situations, is a function of the size of the part and the fixturing requirements. Is surface preparation an important factor in the overall coating process? Yes! A clean and defect-free surface is very important to the process and critical in the achievement of optimum results. Vapor Tech includes in the Coating Services Facility a state-of-the-art automated, 10-stage ultrasonic cleaning, rinsing and vacuum drying line to ensure a spot-free surface prior to coating. What service and support does Vapor Tech provide? Vapor Tech prides itself on the service and support programs accessible to its clients. Vapor Tech’s engineering teams optimize the coating process for the application of each customer. This is done for coating services clients and for clients that acquire coating systems for internal use. Training programs for client personnel, test facilities to experiment with processes, and complete systems assurance programs are available to clients that acquire a coating system. Vapor Tech attends continuously to the quality results and maintenance needs of its clients. Customized solutions through the use of standard components and processes are the keys to the customer satisfaction on which the Vapor Tech reputation is built.
